Wind energy company Vestas wanted to raise its profile as a modern energy provider with a unique media concept.
In order to attract the most attention it could outside of the Superbowl, Vestas centred its activity around the inauguration of Barack Obama as president of the United States. Barack Obama, unlike his predecessor, George Bush, supports enforced reductions in the gases blamed for global warming and he wants to create millions of new "green" jobs, so his environmental credentials matched those of an energy company dedicated to finding wind power solutions.
Vestas decided to team up with CNN to deliver a unique application to Facebook users. The application enabled users to update their own Facebook status directly from CNN.com Live player, watch CNN’s live video coverage of the presidential inauguration and view status updates from other Facebook users logged on via CNN.com in a live feed. Almost like a chat room in a panel down the side of the live footage, viewers could write a sentence in their status box and have their comments read by other people watching the key moment in history around the world. Vestas also had video pre roll advertising running within the live player as well as banner advertisements across CNN.com’s homepage.
CNN.com Live served more than 21.3 million live video streams globally in one day, shattering its all time total daily streaming record set on Election Day with 5.3 million live streams.
